My connection with the Fair Board began in 1982 when as president of the Bremer County Farm Bureau; I was automatically a non-voting member of the Bremer County Fair Board. As a member during 1982-1984, it was much different than it is now. When the 3 member executive board came to a meeting, it was pretty much decided ahead of time what was going to happen. I got frustrated and I couldn’t vote, only to suggest this or that. I was off for about 8 years so in 1992 I got back on as a director, then as vice president. I became president and served in that capacity for 10 years until 2008 when Kevin Rasing took over. Since then I continue to serve as a director.
My job description has changed along the way. I have pretty much covered manure detail to bleacher repair, acquiring donations and the combine derby. The latter 2, I have concentrated on the last couple of years. They have become the top 2 moneymakers of the Bremer County Fair. Our board has changed drastically over the 15-year period to a board that is more progressive and is adding more ideas, venues and activities each year.
I have always enjoyed the Bremer County Fair, as I am a people person I do plan to retire. I want to spend more time with my grandchildren, gardening and traveling along with the other 5 organizations I spend time with!
